Stability Testing

When a manufacturer builds a crane or an aerial device they do not know which commercial vehicle carrier it will be mounted on. The stability of the truck-mounted device must be verified after it is installed or if a major component is added or removed from the vehicle. Load charts and rated capacities can be modified according to the unit stability test and capabilities in order for the user to operate the unit safely. The primary factors that can affect stability are:

  • the mounting location of the lifting device
  • the dimensions and weight of the vehicle
  • the rigidity of the vehicle’s suspension
  • the sub-frame
  • the body type
  • the dimensions and locations of any outriggers.

It is mandatory for all truck-mounted devices sold in North America to be tested for stability as per the manufacturer’s recommendations and meet the intent of the relevant CSA Standard.


JADE+ Inc. is retained by various clients to conduct stability tests for their truck-mounted cranes and aerial devices. Stability testing can be done for trucks that will be used on roadways, railroads and off-road. Testing is conducted as per JADE+ Inc. procedures and are in accordance to the CSA Z150, Z150.3 and C225 standards. If the unit requires a stability test and is not fully covered by the above listed CSA Standards, JADE+ Inc. has a reputation to mesh the relevant sections of the standards and develop a stability test procedure that ensures the health and safety of the operators. Stability tests are only required once on the initial installation or when the unit configuration is modified or changed in a way that will affect stability. For example, replacing a steel dump body with an aluminium one, relocating outriggers, relocating the centre of rotation, etc.


The clients are provided with a certified stability test report that outlines the vehicle and unit, stability test set-up, unit configuration, test loads and results. A weather resistant stability test decal is placed on the vehicle denoting the month and year of the stability test. De-rated capacities are determined when required and we can provide customized de-load charts for each unit. If the device was de-rated, a weather resistant decal is created and placed on the unit detailing the certified tested configuration.
